HOW TO INSTALL CLIP-IN HAIR EXTENSIONS

HOW TO INSTALL CLIP-IN HAIR EXTENSIONS

Reading Time: 3 mins

So, you’ve decided to try clip-in hair extensions, and you can’t wait to see how they’ll transform your look. However, there’s one thing holding you back; you’re not sure how to install clip-in hair extensions.

Well, worry no longer. Our experts at Foxy Locks have put together this easy guide on clip-in hair extension installation!

You will need:

  • Your clip-in hair extensions
  • Hair straighteners
  • Hairpins
  • Small rubber hair bands
  • A wide-tooth comb

Before installing clip-in hair extensions, ensure your hair is clean, conditioned and dry. Give your natural hair a thorough brush to ensure it’s free from tangles.

How to put in clip-in hair extensions

Sectioning the hair

There are two options for sectioning the hair ready for clip-in hair extension installation; create all the sections before or section as you go. Both work equally well, so it’s down to your preference. Don’t be afraid to experiment to find the best way to install clip-in extensions.

Start by using the wide-tooth comb to create your first section, which should be low on the head at the nape of the neck. You want the section to be quite fine and as straight as possible. If you are creating all your sections beforehand, use a small rubber band to secure them. This helps to guide you on where to place clip-in hair extensions.

The next section should be equally as thin and sit slightly higher up, in line with the tops of your ears.

The next section will be the widest and where your widest clip-in hair extension will sit. This section can be thicker than the previous two as you’ve got more hair to cover and keep in place.

Next, we will move on to the sides. You’ll want to ensure your side sections aren’t too high up. Otherwise, you’ll be able to see the clips through your natural hair. Also, ensure the sections are even on each side, so one extension isn’t sitting higher than the other.

Your hair is now ready to install all wefts aside from the two single clips that come with all of our clip-in hair extensions. These single clips are handy for adding extra volume and length in more specific parts of the hair, so it’s best to install the rest of the extensions first and then see where these final clips are needed.

Install clip-in hair extensions

To install, begin with the first section you made at the nape of your neck. Use a 3-clip weft and secure the middle clip into the hair first, then move on to the sides. Once this is secured, you can let the next section down, which will be another 3-clip weft. After this, move on to the widest 5-clip weft, then the sides, and finally the 1-clip wefts where needed. Blending

If you’re new to hair extensions, one of your biggest worries is probably blending them with your natural hair. But don’t worry, our tips will make it nice and easy!

Once all your extensions are clipped in, and you’re happy with the placement, give them a brush through to ensure they’re free of tangles. Then, apply a heat protectant to your natural hair and clip-in extensions.

Using your straighteners, smooth over the hair in small sections to help blend the extensions with your natural locks.

Clip-in hair extensions also look really beautiful when curled. The additional volume that clip-ins give your hair gives you a stunning bouncy curl.

Your extensions can help you create lots of gorgeous styles, so to keep them looking amazing, we recommend washing your extensions every 15-20 wears to remove any product build-up.
