To show you exactly how to ombre hair extensions at home for a salon-worthy finish, we’ve created a simple guide and video tutorial for you to follow.

The Tools You’ll Need

To get ombre hair extensions at home, you will need:

  • Your Foxy Locks hair extensions
  • A home-dye kit (colour of your choice)
  • A mixing bowl
  • A medium-sized tint brush
  • A comb
  • Gloves

Step 1: Apply Dye to the Top Section of Your Extensions

The first step for getting ombre hair extensions at home is to read your dye instructions carefully and mix the product together as instructed. Once you’ve mixed your solution, squeeze it across the top half of your hair extensions, stopping around the middle of the hair. Once you’ve distributed it across the top section, you can dispense all your dye into your mixing bowl to make it easier to access with the brush.

Step 2: Brush the Dye Down Your Extensions

Next (making sure to put your gloves on first to avoid stained hands!) dip your tint brush into your dye and start to brush it down the length of your hair extensions, stopping again around the middle. Press your brush gently down when brushing the dye in to make sure it’s really worked into the extensions. You’ll need to repeat the brushing process a few times to ensure the dye is well blended in order to achieve an even finish. Don’t worry about a straight line – we’re coming to that step next.

Step 3: Feather Out the Dye

Once your dye is evenly distributed across the top of your hair extensions, the next step is to feather out the dye in order to avoid a dreaded straight line and ensure a flawlessly blended finish. To do this, simply gently flick the brush down in vertical strokes towards the bottom of the hair a couple of times until the line is blended out. Once you’ve finished, run your comb down the length of your hair extensions from the top to bottom. If you need to add some more dye to the top, simply pick up some more product with your brush and repeat the process.

Step 4: Repeat on the Other Side

Once you’ve finished one side, simply turn your ombre hair extensions over and start on the other side. You may not need to apply as much dye, as some will have seeped through from the first side. Use your comb to brush it through again and repeat the same feathering process.

Step 5: Condition the Ends

Once you’ve finished adding the dye, brush conditioner through the ends of your hair extensions, as this will help to prevent the dye from running to the ends when you wash it out.

Step 6: Leave to Develop

Now, all you have to do is leave your ombre hair extensions to develop! Remember to check the instructions of your dye to get the timings right, as this can differ between brands.

Step 7: Wash the Dye Out

And finally, once your hair dye has fully developed, it’s time to gently wash it out of your extensions with warm water, shampoo and conditioner. Once all the dye is out of the hair and the water runs clear, leave your hair extensions to dry naturally.

And voila! You should be left with beautiful ombre hair extensions and a whole new look. Ombre hair extensions look great straight but especially amazing in beachy waves, which you can create using our 7-in-1 curling wand.
